The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in one of the SI facilities serviced by the Office of Facilities Management (FM), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The Office of Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all Smithsonian facilities, many of which are designated as historic and all of which are visited by millions of people each year.
In order to be rated qualified, an applicant's overall experience and training must indicate possession of the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the duties of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The Building Services Worker performs various duties in the zone to support overall facility operations; work includes performing heavy manual tasks and maintaining facility cleanliness. In this position, you will: Perform various building cleaning tasks using appropriate cleaning methods, chemical handling procedures, and proper equipment operation and maintenance. Clean offices, exhibit space, restrooms, corridors, storage rooms, stairways, or any area within the confines of the buildings(s) using brooms, mops, buckets, heavy-duty vacuums, buffers, and scrubbers. Clean glass and plexiglass surfaces as directed; maintain stock of cleaning materials and equipment required to complete assignments and notifies their supervisor or leader when supply replenishment or cleaning equipment requires repair and replacement. Assist with labor tasks as required, including moving, arranging, and lifting heavy objects, including building materials, furniture, and collections.
