This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Mechanical Group, Baltimore, Maryland
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to supervise (SCREENOUT) 2. Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc. 3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) 4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) 5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment 6. Knowledge of materials 7. Troubleshooting National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This position is an assistant to the Senior Civilian Supervisor of the Mechanical Group within the Industrial Department at the Coast Guard YARD. This position is responsible for planning, policy continuity, technical coordination and implementation of resources required for accomplishing the shops and YARD objectives in the absence of the Mechanical Group General Foreman. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Assigning and explaining work requirements and operating instructions to subordinate supervisors; setting deadlines and establishing the sequence of work operations to be followed. Maintaining a balanced workload, by shifting assignments, workers, and other resources to achieve the most effective work operations. Reviewing and analyzing work accomplishments, cost and utilization of subordinates to evaluate work progress, control costs, and anticipate and avoid possible problems by recommending corrective action to higher management. Participating with other management officials and/or engineering personnel to develop qualitative and/or quantitative work standards. Evaluating work operations and reviews completed work and inspection reports to assure that standard are met, and coordinates work operations with the supervisors of other organizations and functions. Participating in the planning and establishment of long-range work requirements and schedules.
