Job Description:
This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory service of the VA Medical Center in Northport, NY. The Health Technician performs a range of clerical, technical, administrative, patient care, and general clinic support functions.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/12/2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a position you must have served 52 weeks at the . The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled; OR For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Grade Requirements: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in Federal service that has required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls; scheduling appointments; documenting medical records; and taking and recording vital signs. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. ~OR~ Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The work requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or positioning of patients. The work environment involves risks typically associated with those of a health care environment. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts that requires special safety precautions, including potentially infectious material. Major duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Collects and processes specimens obtained for analyses; Performs venipuncture specimen collections from inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory inpatient with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required resticks; Uses standard aseptic procedures and safeguards; Checks patients into the phlebotomy area taking care to follow protocol; Checks orders by looking into the computer 30 days before and after the date of arrival and ensures that only authorized medical personnel have requested tests; Generates labels to match the test requisition slips, the electronic request, and the patient's identification; Explains procedures to patients; Monitors and maintains all centrifuges and serofuges in the service; Receives and stores laboratory reagents and supplies; and Accessions laboratory tests via the use of Vista. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM with weekend rotation. Compressed/Flexible Schedule. Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service.
