This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Services Group in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to lead. (SCREENOUT) 2. Practices in Construction, Structure 3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) 4. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints) 5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment 6. Knowledge of materials 7. Dexterity and safety National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will be responsible for leading and performing all kinds of skilled journeyman painting tasks involved in the construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels and in the connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include: Articulating and communicating to the team the assignment, project, problem to be solved, actionable events, milestones, and/or program issues under review, and deadlines and time frames for completion. Identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level, and/or occupational specialization. Making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks; and ensure each employee ha an integral role in developing the final team product. Monitoring and reporting on the status and progress of work, checking on work in progress and reviewing completed work to see that the supervisor's instructions on work priorities, methods, deadlines, and quality have been met. Determining the methods, devices, and materials that are best suited to each surface to achieve a glossy finish, grained effect, or a finish that must meet specified thickness levels or other criteria.
