This position is in the Facilities Management Service at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, Birmingham, AL. Responsible for operating various automotive vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, patient transport vans, ambulances, panel trucks, pick-up trucks, cargo vans, trucks, ambulances, and buses.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/23/2025. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Loads and unloads cargo and directs seating arrangements of passengers, assist in lifting and carrying supplies hauled and arranges loads in the vehicle to provide proper weight distribution for safety. Is required to lift and push heavy articles while loading and unloading cargo. Requires reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot control of vehicles. Moderate effort is required in the frequent handling of objects up to and occasionally more than 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Assists and loads wheelchair and stretcher patients in and out of patient transport vehicles. The work requires operating vehicles under various weather and road conditions, on highways and streets in all kinds of weather often for extended periods of time on long trips. May be called back to work after working hour or on weekends to make emergency trips. May be exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials that may contain blood borne pathogens. Must use personal protective equipment during potential exposure.
Duties include but are not limited to the following: Operates a variety of vehicles with approximate gross vehicle weight that exceeds weight class of 26,001 pounds and that can be equipped with or without air brakes; Operates vehicles that carry more than 16 passengers; Picks up and delivers patients, employees, as well as other items such as charts, mail, laboratory specimens, linens, pharmaceuticals, supplies, etc.; Assists accompanying medical personnel in loading, unloading and securing patients; Checks material loaded or delivered against various documents to prevent errors and to certify the condition of items; Determines route to be followed, taking into consideration such factors as ongoing hospital activities, weight limitations, and safety conditions; Assures vehicle is not overloaded; Performs required operator maintenance; Maintains service records, completes delivery records, trip tickets, and compiles accident reports; Loads and unloads crated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles; Performs other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday with rotating weekends. Rotating Shifts are 4:30am to 1:00pm, 5:30am to 2:00pm, 7:00am to 3:30pm, 9:00am to 5:30pm, 10:30am to 6:00pm, and 11:30am to 8:00pm.
