The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Facilities Management (FM), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). SI facilities and properties house about 6,500 employees and attract over 30 million visitors annually in the Metropolitan Washington area, New York City, Maryland and Panama.
For Grade 14: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service. For this position specialized experience is defined providing leadership, direction, planning, management, and administration of complex facilities management functions. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. The Supervisory Facility Operations Specialist directs and coordinates the development and implementation of policies and programs related to the operations, safety, maintenance and infrastructure planning of facility projects within facilities of assigned responsibility. In this position, you will: Develop and apply facilities maintenance and operations techniques that preserve the historic fabric of the facilities. Plan and carry out building management and facilities operations and maintenance. Plan, direct, oversee, evaluate and adjust the work of the zone through subordinate supervisors and/or managers. Develop or lead the development, evaluation and improvement of the Smithsonian-wide standards, policies, plans and programs (such as Smithsonian-wide policies or standards for maintenance practices in historic facilities. Interact with private and public sector organizations, as well as staff throughout OFEO and the Smithsonian, various tenant organizations representatives, contractors and vendors as appropriate.
