Job Description:

This position is located at the Naval Health Clinic, Newport, Rhode Island. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Basic Requirement for Dentist (General Practice): Education: Applicants must possess a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Experience and/or Education Required: A. Applicants must have completed a 3-year residency in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science, AND one year of full-time experience and/or training in professional dentistry work equivalent to the next lower grade level (GP-12). OR B. Applicants must have four years of professional dentistry experience and/or training, equivalent to the next lower grade level (GP-12). OR C. Applicants must have completed a residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science AND professional dentistry experience and/or training equivalent to the next lower grade level (GP-12). When combining residency program and professional dentistry experience and/or training to qualify, the total must be equal to or greater than four years. Note for Qualifying Experience: Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position. Medical Requirement: Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.
Restoration using direct (amalgams, composites, sealants) and indirect (crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays) dental restorative materials.
Perform comprehensive oral examinations.
Perform oral surgery procedures, such as removal of erupted and unerupted teeth, residual root tips, and teeth with exposed roots.
Apply corrective treatment where proper occlusion is difficult to attain.
Perform prophylaxis treatment, scaling and root planning, individual oral health counseling and patient education.
Perform prosthetic work to replace missing teeth.
