About the Position: This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) School of Strategic Landpower, Department of Distance Education as provided under Title 10 USC. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.
Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a term appointment in the excepted service starting on or before 1 July 2025 and not to exceed 3 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirements: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): 1. Knowledge of relevant theoretical and practical experience in the science and practice of Defense Enterprise systems and processes, ideally at the senior/strategic level. OSD/Joint experience preferred. 2. A demonstrated ability to provide superlative teaching at the graduate, and/or Senior Service College level, to include using student learning management systems and collaboration tools (within the last three years highly desired) with an ability to synchronously and asynchronously manage an online seminar of 15-20 students. 3. Ability to conceptualize, design, execute, and assess experiential learning activities that exercise students in applying theory to practice. 4. Knowledge of research and publications in areas relevant to the USAWC curriculum, to include U.S. Department of Defense force management and enterprise systems and processes. 5. Demonstrated capability to refine oral and written communication skills, with a record of successful student advising. 6. An advanced degree in a relevant field with a Ph.D. preferred.
Develop curriculum for the Defense Management course in the Distance Education Program (DEP).
Serve as a faculty instructor for online and resident core courses, including but not limited to, Defense Management, Military Strategy and Campaigning, Strategic Leadership, National Security, Regional Studies, and Theories of War.
Design and teach elective courses related to the application of Defense Management systems and processes to resource U.S. Department of Defense missions.
Contribute to and coordinate for curriculum updates, assessments, and faculty development for assigned courses.
Engage in research and publishable scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the Army War College curriculum.
Contribute to student success in the DEP through advising and professional communication.
Contribute to the Department of Distance Education and the Army War College mission by fulfilling other faculty duties as required.
