Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Preferred Experience: Successful completion of an accredited Residency Program in Periodontics, Board Certified Periodontist or equivalent work experience following completion of Residency Program. Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is seeking a part-time board certified or board eligible Periodontist. The Periodontist Specialty dental officer serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. SCOPE OF DUTIES. The Periodontist Specialty dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of periodontal care including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Delivers periodontal dental treatment and supports oral health programs. Serves as a consultant to other dentists, dental hygienists, residents, and technical assistants involved in treating diseases of investing tissues. Instructs dental providers and technical assistants in preventive dental protocols and techniques. In addition to the Scope of Service expected for general dentistry, the core scope of clinical practice for Periodontics includes the pathogenesis, assessment, diagnosis and management of: 1. Periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions 2. Soft and hard tissue defects around teeth and implants 3. Soft and hard tissue defects around teeth and implants 4. Tooth replacement with dental implants 5. Interactions between oral and systemic diseases including problems of medically compromised patients. 6. Bone defect repair and regeneration (which may extend into the maxillary sinus) 7. Soft tissue resective procedures and periodontal plastic surgery 8. Periodontal and peri-implant flap surgery procedures with or without concomitant osseous surgery 9. Aesthetic and pre-prosthetic crown lengthening and pre-orthodontic surgery 10. Atraumatic extraction and ridge preservation 11. Regenerative and reconstructive periodontal surgical procedures including guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration 12. Management of complications that may occur around oral implants 13. Management and treatment planning with interdisciplinary engagement for complex cases VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
