The position is aligned under the Hazardous Waste Supervisor, is responsible for supporting and performing tasks in specialized section of Regulated Medical Waste, Sani-Pak Sterilizer & Cardboard Compactor, Sensitive & Non-Sensitive Material, Sharps Containers, Inventory & Logs, Comingled Recyclable Waste. Additionally, she/he leads Laundry Workers and Laundry Machine Operator who perform textile distribution and Health Aids responsible for cleaning noncritical equipment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Lifting to 50 pounds. Approximately 40 percent of time spent standing, 40 percent of time spent walking and 20 percent of time spent sitting. Hearing and visual acuity. Manual dexterity to use a phone and operate equipment.The work is accomplished in a variety of different areas including operating· rooms, treatment rooms, examination rooms, imaging rooms, wards and other public, recreational and administrative areas. Protective clothing and personnel protective equipment (PPE) including ·gowns, gloves, safety shoes, masks, etc. is required in the accomplishment of some aspects of the work. There is the potential for exposure to strong cleaning solutions, bodily fluids and communicable disease. The work can involve occupied patient rooms and interaction -with both medical and psychiatric patients. May be required to work inside and outside. May require some exposure to hazardous cleaning chemicals.
The position is a working leader for Hazardous Waste, Laundry and Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) throughout the Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center and performs full range of regular duties. The position leads Hazardous Waste, laundry workers and RME employees and others in performing their duties required to maintain the medical center in a clean, organized, and sanitary condition. The position is guided by EMS and Medical Center policies and procedures, VA regulations and verbal instructions from EMS Management. Assists the Hazardous Waste Supervisor with plans as needed, including reassignment of staff to meet requirements. Coordinates with customers to meet obligations. Ensures the department has adequate supplies and equipment on hand necessary to meet the department needs. The employee may work in the laundry running laundry equipment, delivering, folding, and inventorying laundry. The employee may work cleaning, storing, and delivering RME. The employee may work as a hazardous waste disposer collecting, compacting garbage, identifying hazardous chemicals and properly disposing of chemicals, recycling to include cardboard, paper, cans, bottles and paper. Collecting sensitive paper and proper disposal. The Hazardous Waste Leader engages with all employees to provide direction and motivation in accomplishing all tasks, while training the employee in proper procedures and techniques to meet or exceed desired outcomes of workload and safety. The incumbent provides on-the-job training to all employees assigned. Recommends employees that need remedial training based on observation and interaction with employees. The leader communicates Instructions from the Supervisor to the employees and then validates the completion of the work assigned. The position coordinates projects with nurses and other area supervisors to ensure work timely and successful completion. This position sets the pace of each task demonstrates methods, techniques and provides direction to assigned employees in their assigned tasks. Ensures all tasks are complete and deadlines are met. This position has no supervisory authority. Other duties as assigned and as needed.
