You will serve as a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the Medical Design, Directorate of NAVMEDREADLOGCMD.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Diagnosing failures, making minor repairs, adjustments, and major repairs to a large variety of heavy-duty transportation equipment of many types. Mechanically and physically adapting or altering items to fit and mesh into systems and vehicles. Finding ways to correct defects when existing methods and procedures do not give the desired results. Determining the maximum wear allowances of parts and proper tolerances in the fitting of shafts, bearings, gears, pistons, etc. Making proper adjustments to frictions, brakes, controls, and linkage and identifying parts, test procedures, and proper greases and lubricants. You will perform full repair, rebuild, overhaul, and modification of complex heavy mobile equipment with integrated engines.
You will disassemble, repair and overhaul gear cases, winch works, hydraulic systems, sheaves and hooks, chains, and control systems, and tests and adjusts as necessary.
You will conduct tests using diagnostic equipment, including computer-controlled test equipment, to identify problems which are difficult to locate and repair
You will perform machining operations associated with repairs such as cylinders, bearings, bushings, turning or grinding shafts, pistons, brake drums, wheels, and manufacture of replacement parts.
You will perform inspections of equipment for loose parts, proper air brake connections, damaged or worn tires, proper air pressure in tires, adequate fuel supply, water in the radiator, proper oil level, battery condition.
