You will serve as a Laundry Worker with the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center located in Spokane, Washington.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, 06/27/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Position requires continuous standing, walking, hand/eye coordination, turning, bending, overhead reaching and lifting at least 50 pounds. Incumbent must be able to push or pull up to 500-pound carts mounted on rollers. Working Conditions: Work is inside in well lighted areas, subject to noise, hazards, lint, hot, humidity and movement of operating equipment. Incumbent is required to wear protective clothing when working in areas where mandatory because of exposure to infectious disease and biological waste. Workers are exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machinery. Safety precautions will be observed at all times.
Sort bulk laundry by type of garment or linen (e.g., all pajamas in one group; all robes in another) and fold roughdry laundry according to set procedure. Sort laundry from patients with contagious diseases while wearing protective masks, gloves, and gowns, if required. Fold ironed flatwork at the delivery end of the flatwork ironer, place in stacks of prescribed numbers, and wrap family or personal bundles with paper or plastic. Operate washer extractor, monorail system, and gas and steam dryers. Pull wet laundry from the washer, push heavy carts of wet laundry, and lift bundles weighing over 50 pounds. Shake out tangled, semi-dry items for flatwork ironing team or hold item taut and hand feed leading edge into the pressure roll. Count and stack all items in preparation of flow rack after hand folding or operating the small piece folding machine. Read laundry tickets, do simple counting, alphabetize or put in numerical order to accurately follow procedures to avoid loss of items or mistakes in pricing. Inspect washed items, if it's obviously not clean or needs repair, set aside for the supervisor. Place tickets in bins or hangers in sequence, sort various groups of garments and linens into bins by matching identification symbols, check number of items against those indicated on ticket, and place assembled bundles on conveyor for wrapping. Perform other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM PDT.
