The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) who’s mission is to promote understanding of the natural world and our place in it. NMNH has a collection of 148 million specimens and artifacts. Each one reflects a moment in space and time and in these moments, we find Earth’s story.
Basic Qualifications: Experience GS-14: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as having experience documenting and managing collections transactions, developing and implementing collections policy and provenance research, and supervising collections program staff in the fields of registration, conservation, provenance and collections. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. The Supervisory Registrar (Provenance) will serve as the head of collections stewardship, implementing and managing related NMNH collections policy, including programmatic work related to determining collections provenance, including advising, creating, managing, and coordinating Smithsonian and museum policy and procedures for the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). In this position, you will: Manage the development, implementation, and review of transaction management, and inventory control policies and procedures for all collections-holding units within NMNH. Collaborate with the Collections Program and the office of the Associate Director for Science and Chief Scientist (ADCS) to establish training programs and curriculum for scientific staff covering regulatory, legal, ethical, and policy matters relative to collections acquisition and management of collection transactions. Manage policies and procedures related to national and international regulations, treaties and conventions affecting collections, and assists in same at Institutional levels. Direct provenance research across the museum and related collections policies, to include working with Repatriation and Human Dignity programs to address cross-topic return or stewardship inquiries. Perform administrative and personnel management functions relative to staff supervised. Serve as a principal member of NMNH Collections Information System review or control boards.
