Job Description:

The Supervisory Social Worker is assigned to Acute Psychiatry in the Mental Health Care Line. The Supervisor will clinically and administratively oversee all acute psychiatry social workers on units 7 A, 78 and 4 North. The Supervisor will also provide direct patient care on the Acute Psychiatry Units.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f). Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going tohttp://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-12 Education and Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a)Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines. (b)Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. (c)Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. (d)Ability to provide staff training and development. (e)Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers. Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. At the GS-12 grade level, supervisory social workers typically have significant personnel management responsibilities for a small to moderate sized professional and non-professional staff, including support staff and professional staff at the GS-12 grade level and below. The supervisory social worker is responsible for the professional and administrative management of an area in a social work service, in a care/product line, or multiple facilities. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the work are generally minor and are generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional travel. Physical activity involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and carrying light items such as papers, books or other supplies. The incumbent uses a computer and standard office equipment to complete tasks. The emotional demands can be stressful in working with the Veteran/Patient population and their families/caregivers. A level of self-awareness is essential.

The treatment plan will be completed and updated as specified by policy for the assigned work area. Referral to service providers - Throughout the course of treatment the social worker is the subject matter expert on VA and/or community resources. The social worker will collaborate with other service providers in reassessing the Veteran's needs. Resource Usage/Development - The social worker is responsible for using the current social work resource file of VA and community social service programs and enhancing the content to the benefit of Veterans. Crisis Intervention - Social worker is experienced in making rapid assessments and developing crisis management plans for admission to mental health inpatient programs. Education/Health promotion and prevention - Social worker provides education related to VA and community resources, entitlements, Advance Directives/ Living Wills and refers Veterans/families to the appropriate interdisciplinary team member for identified health education needs. Coordination of non-institutional and institutional services - The social worker will review the progress notes from the other providers to accurately determine the strengths and limitations of each Veteran being referred for mental health services. Social worker will educate the Veteran, families, and the team of various options available to them and will collaborate with the Veteran and family on the preferred option. Supportive counseling - Social worker will provide the Veterans and their caregivers with ongoing supportive counseling. Administrative Responsibilities: Enter all Veteran/family contacts in the electronic record using appropriate formats and templates. This information will be entered in a complete, confidential, and professional manner to ensure information on the patient is shared with other VA staff. This information will be reviewed on a regular basis. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with employees, volunteers, consumers and stakeholders within the VA and outside community agencies. Attends all appropriate staff meetings (interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, Mental Health Social Work staff meetings, committee meetings as appropriate, etc.) and perform other duties as required. Collaborates in the performance improvement processes and comply with performance measures as required by the VA for their specific population and/or program. Coordinates the program operation of the inpatient acute psychiatry unit, and programmatic activities of professional and multidisciplinary staff with various tours of duty. Assists in planning, establishing, and implementing policies and procedure, developing individual or group goals and objectives as well as monitoring, operating, evaluating, coordinating, and overseeing the clinical activities of the psychiatry units. Ensures the clinical staff are aware of and adhere to all current directives of VHA, and meet current JCAHO standards, State licensure standards, and VA-OIG expectations.
