This position is located within the Facilities Management Service at the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System and is responsible for the transport of patients and other passengers to and from the facility and/or outpatient clinics.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/07/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Driver's License Requirement: Must have a current State of Oklahoma Driver's License Class B, CDL with Air Brake and passenger endorsements and maintain a safe driving record, must be able to efficiently operate a vehicle equipped with either standard or automatic transmissions, power or standard dual air type braking systems. clutches, gear lever shifts, and other equipment normally present on motor vehicles. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Motor Vehicle Operator must be in good physical and mental condition. The employee is subject to moderate amounts of reaching, bending, lifting, turning, muscular strain of back, shoulders, and aims to assist patients and maneuver vehicles into tight spaces and loading docks and ramps. Employee occasionally handles loading and unloading of items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Motor Vehicle Operator is subject to all kinds of weather conditions from hot (in excess of 110 degrees F), cold (minus 10 degrees F), rain, sleet, heavy freezing rain, and snow while driving. Vehicle cabs are normally kept warm in winter (65-75 degrees F) and when the driver leaves the cab to work, the temperature may be as low as -10 degrees F or below. In the summer, vehicle cabs are hot {100 degrees or above) from outside heat plus heat from vehicle engine and exhaust systems. Employee is subject to work on slippery surfaces during the winter months and during rainstorms in summer months. The Motor Vehicle Operator may encounter abusive language, combative passengers/patients and other types of abusive behavior from passengers while in route between destinations. Situations will be dealt with, as needed, at the driver's discretion and judgment. Some work may be performed in the Medical Center. The employee risks are typical of a hospital environment.
Duties include but not limited to: Safely maneuver through varying traffic conditions from moderately congested open through fares, to extremely congested freeways/inner city streets, to uncontrolled/regulated large parking lots, all with a danger of serious accidents. Motor Vehicle Operator must be in good physical and mental condition. The employee is responsible for obeying all federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations while operating a motor vehicle assigned. Will adhere to the established practices described in Policy. Must have the ability to consistently follow safe work practices and procedures, particularly while lifting patients and cargo. Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for vehicle and/or equipment assigned. Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for getting work assigned to the position accomplished in a safe and efficient manner. Must have the ability to follow technical guides from the manufacturing company on all equipment assigned to him/her in this position. Must have the ability to interpret instructions both written and verbal. Safely drive under all types of weather and road conditions to include extremely adverse iced roads, snow covered roads, severe thunderstorms, dense fog, etc. The Motor Vehicle Operator is independently and directly responsible for patients, passengers, and the materials that are transported. Placement of wheelchairs in the van, and secures all wheelchairs in floor tracks and straps all wheelchairs in place, ensuring safety/security of patients being transported. Must have a current State of Oklahoma Drivers License Class B, CDL with air brake and passenger endorsements and maintain a safe driving record. Must be able to operate an electronically controlled wheelchair/stretcher lift when assigned to drive wheelchair van and/or station ambulance. Employee, as required, will operate the shuttle bus/van and maintain in the schedule as near as possible. Operates other hospital vehicles and equipment including 10,000-pound gross vehicle weight tractor and snow removal equipment (graders and snowplows). Employee is responsible for knowledge of and obeying all station safety regulations while operating various types of vehicles both on and off station.
