The Tennessee Valley Healthcare System is seeking a Part-time Physician (Plastic Surgery Section Chief) to join our Nashville-based group in providing care for our patients. We are a large, vibrant, academic VA practice and many of us are associated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This position is responsible for staffing and managing Plastic Surgery clinics and operating rooms across TVHS and also providing Plastic Surgery care to veterans both clinically and surgically.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: The best qualified surgeon would be specialized in hand surgery, microsurgical techniques, breast and body contouring, has supervised residents and is affiliated or able to become affiliated with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Physical Requirements: Must be able to complete the duties of a Plastic Surgeon. This may include light lifting (under 15 pounds); straight pulling (.5 hour); reaching above shoulders; use of fingers (both hands required); walking (1 hour intermittently); ability to distinguish colors and shades of color; rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable to 13" to 16"; hearing aid permitted

Attendance at staff meetings and participation on committees as assigned. Responsible for reviewing all surgical procedures pertaining to Plastic Surgery and conducting regular Plastic Surgery Morbidity and Mortality conferences. Responsible for the completion of Joint Commission's mandate for Focused and Ongoing Professional Performance Evaluation (FPPE, OPPE) for all Plastic Surgery attending physicians. Responsible for providing continuing education to nursing staff. Attendance at monthly Surgical Quality Workgroup meeting and Multidisciplinary Morbidity and Mortality conference. Responsible for timely medical records, including computer order/entry, consult disposition, closing encounters, etc. for entire section. Responsible for accurate on-call schedules. Responsible for inpatient and outpatient Plastic Surgery services. Prompt response to taskings, requests for information, communication from Surgery administrative and clinic staff. Supports Chief of Surgical Service and TVHS in obtaining Performance Measures. Responsible for completing all VA mandatory and assigned educational trainings. Carries out administrative responsibilities assigned by the Chief of Surgery and the Assistant Chief of Surgery. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Serves as Section Chief and provides supervision for all staff in the plastic surgery section and will perform various supervision duties for that section. CUSTOMER SERVICE REQUIREMENT: Meets the needs of all customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. AGE, DEVELOPMENT AND CULTURAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS: Provides care and/or services appropriate to the age of the patients being served, and which is appropriate to the cognitive; emotional, and chronological maturation of the patient. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age- specific needs and to provide care needed as described in the services' policies and procedures. Takes into consideration age-related differences of the various veteran populations with this institution. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge of the changes associated with aging and possess the ability to provide care/support based upon age related factors. Ensures staff receives training in these categories. Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved. COMPUTER SECURITY REQUIREMENT: Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA guidelines. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
