Job Description:
The Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnogram) position is located in the Medicine department at the West Haven, CT location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38U.S.C. 7403(f). Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination: GS-08 Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography): In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-8 level, positions at this grade may be supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments. For this vacancy applicants must meet the Experience and all KSA's listed below to be found qualified. Experience: At this level the Polysomnography Technician performs a full range of standard, but complex, polysomnography examinations with responsibility for Properly and accurately calibrating all instruments prior to the beginning of the PSG tracing and selection of appropriate electrode montages and sensitivity and filter settings to elicit the best possible tracings. Independently determine the need for CPAP during all night sleep studies for sleep apnea. May administer nerve conduction velocity tests. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk: Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form. Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action. Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians. Preferred Experience: Experience with Sleep Lab Management and Oversight is preferred. For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic ( BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable. The duties of this occupation include but are not limited to the following : Independently explains the procedures to the patient and answers any questions regarding HST study, so the studies are close to artifact free. Program HST equipment, download HST data, assist with scoring and report generation. Provides patient education. Receives and acts on requests and/or instructions for tests from Sleep Lab Supervisor. Receives assignments that require application of standard and nonĀ-standard procedures and seeks advice or the assistance from the Sleep Lab Supervisor when questions or uncertainty about a test arises. Understands and carries out the requests made by physicians and when an uncommon, unique, or new test is required, the employee consults with supervisor for guidance. Sets up the room to assure supplies and other required equipment are carefully selected and properly presented as determined by the test being performed. Sets up the HST equipment, performs quality checks to ensure readiness for use during the procedure. Ensures that all equipment is kept clean and safe for use by the patient.
