Job Description:

This position is located in the laundry section of the environmental management service. The incumbent is responsible for the operation and maintenance on the commercial type laundry equipment located in the washroom. Incumbent uses knowledge and judgement in the safe, efficient and economical processing of an annual workload of approximately 1,000,000 lbs. The processing of hospital linens, employee uniforms and patient wearing apparel on a timely basis to meet general production schedules.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Needs physical ability for accomplishment of heavy physical tasks for extended periods. Physical demands include: pushing heavy carts; lifting loads over 50 lbs; pulling wet wash from washer/extractor and continual bending, stooping, walking and standing on concrete floors. Working conditions include machinery noise; hot and humid atmosphere; offensive odors while sorting and washing soiled linen, which is contaminated with infectious organisms and having wet clothing and shoes will pulling laundry loads. Subjected to the possibility of minor cuts, scrapes, bruises and needle wounds.
Duties: Independently sorts items received into washing classifications based on fabric content, color, and degree of soil or stains. Processes the wash classification through the washroom equipment. Selects the correct pre-determined wash formula to process the load in order to meet quality control standards. Unloads the pass-through washer/extractor into laundry bags and sends the wet wash to other processing departments within the laundry plant. Load and upload 3 commercial drier/tumblers and ensure that correct time and temperature settings are used for load being processed. Responsible for general cleanliness of the washroom at all times and will assist with general housekeeping in the clean side of the building.
