This position is located at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC, IN within the Nursing, Perioperative service. Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature of health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose, and treat medial conditions, as well as the completion of clerical and administrative duties

You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-065 grade level in the federal service; experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: experience working in Outpatient Clinics, and Surgery Centers. Possess clerical and computer skills. Posses good Customer Service. Ability to communicate clearly and work in a team environment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Patient Care duties: 1. Makes observations and thoroughly documents care and the patient's response. Appropriately seeks assistance and guidance by informing the appropriate medical provider of changes in the patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. 2. The Health Technician performs, reports, and records assigned nursing care in SDS/PACU. 3. Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance, and effectively performs supportive tasks as directed when appropriate. 4. Based on the patient's goals, provides patient and family health education, after initiated by provider or registered nurse, to include self-management, prevention, and wellness. 5. Interacts and communicates appropriately with patients and family members. 6. Teaches patients and family members to necessity of continuing proper handling and precleaning of reusable medical equipment. 7. Adheres to principles of infection control, safety, and universal precautions. 8. Incumbent possesses knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment. 9. Demonstrates competence utilizing special equipment needed to perform job duties. 10. Supports patient-driven care in a safe, efficient, and cost-efficient manner, using evidence-based principles. 11. Promotes patient and personnel safety. Demonstrates competence utilization of Safe-Patient Handling equipment. 12. Technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties based on the Peri Anesthesia/Perioperative Care Model while providing care to variable patient populations. 13. Receives request or instructions for procedures. Interprets request for instructions for medical or health care personnel. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations. Employee understands and carries out the request made by the health care professional. Monitors patients for adverse reactions and takes appropriate action based on established policy and past experience. Records results and ensures that they are made a part of permanent medical record. Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate medical/health care professionals. Performs other duties as directed or assigned. 14. Assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions. Adjust, adapts, and operates specialized equipment and accessories needed for difficult procedures. Perform difficult specialized tests and measurements that are preliminary to the physician's treatment of the patient. Administrative Duties: Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit. Maintains patients records/charts. Provides general clerical/administrative support coordination work for the unit. Accurately enters order and/or consults approved through Outpatient Protocols. Assist patients in contacting members of their care team within PCS Surgery and/or navigating through the health care system. Support clinical flow to include but not limited to scrubbing provider panel, communicating with Specialty Care Clinic/Medical Support Assistance for scheduling needs, pre-appointment check-in, and clinical reminder review. Support completion of medical documentation through communication with the Specialty Clinic Team; to include FMLA, faxes, etc. Checks appointments, tests, and coordinates all activities and appointments for the clinical areas, avoiding conflict in patient treatment plan. Supports SDS/PACU through evaluating, answering, and sending secure messaging to appropriate care tea, member. Documents, uploads files/documents to patient record appropriately in the Veterans Electronic Health Record (EHR) meeting facility and VHA Directives. Collects data from patients records in preparation for patient appointment or in quality improvement initiatives. Identifies inconsistencies or discrepancies among patients EHR and alerts appropriate staff for corrective action. Work Schedule: Full Time, 8:00 - 4:30pm Monday - Friday Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician - Perioperative/PD92089A Physical Requirements: Work pace range from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Includes lifting to positioning patients on/off gurney, and or wheelchair. Work requires specific, but common, physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients' examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common disabilities. Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic equipment or patients.
