Job Description:

The San Francisco VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a full time Electrician position with Engineering Service located at the San Francisco Division. The purpose of this position is to complete installations, modifications, repairs, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment throughout the medical center.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Electricians work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Incumbents will utilize safety and security practices to maintain a safe, clean and healthy work environment. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Works in a hospital/hazardous environment and may be required to wear a respirator. Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, trouble shoots, tests and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls and all equipment as assigned. Read system diagrams and schematics, interpret basic electronic terms and symbols and apply a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground, and install wiring and equipment for electrical /electronic systems. Works from building plans, blue prints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, electric maintenance and repair manuals to plan and layout the routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, load continuity and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. He/she determine and place distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Conduct research and write orders for approval by supervisor and assist in maintaining stock levels for timely repairs. Keep all stock and shop areas neat, clean and orderly. Keeping tools in a safe, clean working order and protected from theft. Receives work through the electronic work order system, verbally or through written work orders. Log in VISTA (DHCP) orders to receive work orders, generate work orders, receive electronic mail, request leave and perform other administrative functions. Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings. Use trade formulas to calculate common properties, such as voltage, voltage drop and current capability. Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices. Use hand tools and power tools, such as cable pullers, hydraulic benders, pipe threading machines and testing devices. Diagnose problems and determine needed repairs or replacements. Arrange and install materials in order to ensure proper and safe operation of systems, circuits, and equipment utilized. Troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Make regular and periodic inspections of electrical systems and equipment compliance. Other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Various Work Schedules, Schedule will be based on the facility's needs. Shift is subject to change and may include Weekends and Holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD08431A Physical Requirements: Incumbent may complete repairs and installations from ladder, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard to reach places. This requires electrical workers to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently lift and carry tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, incumbent lift or move with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighing more than 50 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent may be required to make repairs and installation in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet; manholes of 30 feet deep, and occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors. Incumbent are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises and occasionally work in areas requiring the use of respirators.
