This position serves as a journeyman High Voltage Electrician in the Electrical Maintenance Unit of the Engineering Service. The High Voltage Electrician is assigned to the Engineering Department of the VA Medical Center in Bath, New York.
In order to qualify for this position you must meet the below requirements. SCREEN-OUT: Do you possess the ability to do the work of the position (i.e., High Voltage Electrician) without more than normal supervision based on your training/experience? This position is responsible for performing journeyman level High Voltage Electrician duties: inspecting and performing maintenance and repair, installations of high voltage, primary distribution switch gear, transformers, lines and auxiliary equipment, secondary distribution lines, controls, panels and equipment. AND PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Incumbent is required to work from ladders, scaffolds and platforms in hard to reach places, inside and outside. Work is completed from a high reach bucket truck to repair street and all lighting fixtures. Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions is required. Incumbent lifts and carries weight up to 20 lbs. and occasionally over 20 lbs. The Incumbent's work environment can be dirty, dusty, greasy, noisy and occasionally work has to be done in inclement weather. Exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, burns, and electrical shock may be present. Occasionally work must be completed in man holes, attic spaces and pits. The Incumbent is expected to utilize appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, helmets, ear muffs, insulated gloves, etc., follow all safety policies and procedures and attend safety training. Duties include, but are not limited to the following; Performs maintenance, repair, modification and new installation of all laboratory and x-ray equipment. This includes installation of UPS systems, buck-boost transformers and all other auxiliary equipment. Performs maintenance, repair and modification of the high voltage primary distribution system which is 12,470 volts. This procedure includes visual inspection, use of electrical safety equipment such as high voltage rubber gloves, hot sticks and high voltage indicators. Performs maintenance and repair and installation of transformers which includes changing high voltage fuses, changing transformer tap settings for proper voltage, securing connections, visual inspection, and cleaning transformer compartments. Performs maintenance and repair on high voltage loop switches and is responsible for safe and proper switching procedures and operations. Incumbent performs visual inspection and repair of electrical connections and other auxiliary equipment associated with loop switches. As a journeyman electrician, duties include operating, inspecting and maintaining emergency generators throughout the Medical Center. Incumbent performs maintenance and repair of automatic transfer switches associated with the emergency generators and records and documents required operation and maintenance of emergency generators and associate equipment. Perform installation, maintenance and repair of secondary distribution electrical systems, systems, three phases and single phase with voltages of 480/277/240/208/120 volts respectively. Performs maintenance and repair of hydraulic and traction drive elevators. Installs, maintains and repairs the station cable T.V. system and associated equipment. Interprets and apply electrical wiring diagrams, schematics and as-built electrical drawings for electrical and electronic equipment and systems. Possess the ability to install, maintain and repair electronic equipment such as; nurse call systems, fire alarm and intrusion alarm systems and electronic speed drives for motor control. The ability to interpret basic electronic schematics and the possession of troubleshooting skills for A.C. and D.C. systems is required. Use of formulas basic to the trade to figure voltage, amperage and resistance is needed. Perform installation, maintenance and repair of boiler plant equipment, hospital equipment, canteen equipment and all other operating equipment. Incumbent must have mechanical as well as electrical and electronic skills to perform maintenance and repair of electric wheelchairs and other patient mobility equipment.
