This position is located at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY. The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types of transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports.
Driver's License Requirement: At a minimum a current and valid state issued Driver's License is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid state issued Driver's License. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Effort is required to assist Veterans and/or caregivers from entering and embarking from the vehicle. The position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, regular stooping and bending, the use of arms and feet to operate the vehicle and occasionally the lifting of moderately heavy medical equipment/wheelchairs. The incumbent may be required to change flat tires. Operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions on public roads and highways; there is the possibility of both minor personal accidents, such as cuts or bruises while loading or unloading the vehicle. As well as injuries as a result of a more serious vehicle accident. The incumbent is exposed to periods of driving in heavy traffic. Major duties and responsibilities include: Receiving work assignments and direction regarding work methods, procedures and schedules from either the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Mobility Manager; Arriving at and departing from pickup and discharge points at scheduled times; Reading installation maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route; Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use; Using multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily; Loading and unloading patients and medical supplies; Performing operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation; Maintaining records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports; Performs other related duties as assigned. **Must successfully complete Basic Life Support training. ** Work Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
