Job Description:

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking, sitting, talking, use of the telephone, etc. Strenuous physical activity is not required although the incumbent is expected to withstand pressure and stress as part of their day-to-day activities. There is ongoing exposure to individuals having psychiatric and physical illness and disabilities. These include violent or aggressive behavior and chronic psychiatric and medical problems. The Deputy Chief of the Emergency Medicine Section reports directly to the Chief of Medicine and the Section Chief of Emergency Medicine and is responsible for the clinical and administrative functions of the Emergency Department. The incumbent is responsible for participation and oversight of staff physicians and NP/PA/ICT patient care performance measures, compliance, training, and performance improvement, recruitment and retention of highly qualified and experienced providers, participating in various Medical Center committees to ensure performance measures are met, compliance with applicable rules and regulations, as well as participation in system redesign activities. The Duputy Chief of Emergency Medicine will also serve as a liaison between the Emergency Medicine Section and the other VA specialty sections, as well as the MUSC Department of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Training programs. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Deputy Chief of the Emergency Medicine Section will perform the following in the absence of and/or at the discretion of the Chief of Emergency Medicine Section: Assist the Section Chief in: -Representing the Emergency Department at all applicable hospital administrative and patient care meetings -Meeting with all providers in the Emergency Department regularly to review protocols, procedures, expectations -Monitoring established VA/VISN/Joint Commission, etc., performance measures and identified goals for the Emergency Department -Developing and implementing an orientation work manual and/or process for all providers of the Emergency Department -Monitoring overall performance of all providers in the Emergency Department and provide performance improvement opportunities or interventions as appropriate -Maintaining an up to date schedule which provides appropriate 24/7 provider coverage in the Emergency Department -All recruitment efforts for providers in the Emergency Department Emergency Department Physician: Performs assessments/examinations on encounters with all presenting patients. Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation. Provide Attending Physician oversight to residents and students. Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients. Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up. Discuss treatment plan with patient and/or family/caregiver. Participate in Quality Assurance, chart reviews, and support applicable ED performance measures . Coordinate patient care with consultants as deemed appropriate. Emergency Department physician will support the safety, occupational health, and fire protection program by the application of approved standards, regulations, practices, and work methods. Direct patient care focused on the immediate decision making and action necessary to prevent death or any further disability both in the ED and the out-of-hospital setting by interacting with emergency medical technicians and in the emergency department. Asses, evaluate, diagnose, and provide initial treatment to patients who present in the Emergency Department with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition; to provide services necessary to ameliorate minor illnesses or injuries and stabilize patients with major illnesses or injuries; and to assess all patients to determine whether additional care is necessary.
