The Health Physicist is located within the Richard L. Roudebush Medical Center, a level 1A complexity VHA healthcare system providing services in multiple counties and facilities within central Indiana. The incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive clinical, safety, and research program that encompasses all forms of ionizing radiation.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS12. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Basic Requirements Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR, Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in above degree requirement. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring and reviewing work sequences to develop radiological control procedures to improve radiological control practices and prevent work stoppages. Duties include, but not limited to: The incumbent serves as the Radiation Safety Officer overseeing a comprehensive program in support of hundreds of individuals in the Services of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Cardiology, Surgery, Dental, Research and various other Medical and Surgical specialties using ionizing radiation in a clinical/academic/research setting under a single NHPP radioactive materials permit (issued under the authority of the NRC). The incumbent plans, directs leads, and executes the radiation safety and medical health physics programs of the RLR VAMC in a technical, scientific, and administrative scope of function with responsibility for all diagnostic, therapeutic and research modalities that require the use of ionizing radiation. Advises ancillary staff, researchers, technical, and medical personnel in the safe use of radioactive materials and devices producing ionizing radiation. Review of experimental procedures including dose­ specific calculations and development of risk wording, occupational dosimetry determinations for employees, and evaluation of data regarding patient absorbed radiation dose. The incumbent offers consultation and advice to other onsite and offsite senior technical experts because of the position-specific responsibilities in the various associated disciplines. The responsibilities and resulting work have ongoing significance toward the success of the organization due to the wide area of impact relative to all uses of ionizing radiation. Evaluates shielding requirements for radiographic devices, linear accelerators, and radioactive materials and sets a monitoring program to determine resulting exposure levels. Evaluates the training and experience of the medical staff and other professional personnel relative to regulatory compliance requirements for the use of radioactive materials and machine-produced ionizing radiation in clinical and research settings. Interprets regulations which contain little detail and crafts a detailed program to meet the required standards. Independently planning, coordinating, and carrying out the duties, resolving any conflict that arises, working with others and interpreting policies and regulations and develops local protocols and SOPs to meet these requirements.
