Job Description:

The position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, U.S. Capitol Building, Assistant Superintendent, Tenant Services and Facilities Operation Division, Maintenance Branch. The selectee will serve as a Sheet Metal Mechanic Helper performing trades helper tasks and routine shop maintenance. The selectee will enjoy non-competitive promotion potential up to the WG-11 while working under journey-level mechanics.
You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. You must meet the following SCREEN-OUT: Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision which includes working independently, showing job responsibility and exercising initiative. WG-5: Has helper level knowledge of trade practices and entry level skills in the use and maintenance of trade tools and equipment.
Tour of Duty: 3:30 AM - 12:00 PM (Hours may change depending on Operational Needs of Management. The selectee will enjoy non-competitive promotion potential up to the WG-11, going from helper to worker to mechanic level while working under journey-level mechanics. Duties: Sheet Metal Mechanic Helper As a helper, assists advanced leaders and journey level workers and learns in the operation of power machines to perform routine cuts and measurements. Learns to assemble and install parts and units by getting tools and supplies, carrying materials, and lifting and holding materials in place during operations. Learns to operate hand shears, hand roller, handbrakes, saws, and drills to cut roll, fold, saw, and drill sheet metal as marked or reviewed by journey level workers. Assists in filing rough metal surfaces or edges to a smooth finish. Cleans work areas and keeps work benches clean and orderly and tools and machines lubricated. Assists advanced helper and journey level Sheet Metal Mechanics in sorting tools, cleaning the shop, carrying materials, and maintaining a safe work site environment. Aids in carrying tools and equipment holding materials during the repair, fabrication, modification, and installation of sheet metal parts, items, and assemblies Complies with all safety requirements including wearing protective equipment when near the metal cutting processes, such as eye protection and gloves to avoid sharp edges. Follows instructions of journey workers on all safety matters. Assists with routine tasks, such as accepting deliveries, counting stock, and loading and unloading trucks. Ensures total parts requirements are delivered to the work site. The employee must utilize knowledge of and comply with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, and AOC rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training, either on-the-job or through classroom training, to ensure that all safety practices and equipment are fully utilized. Uses required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
