The incumbent is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Supervisor, Energy Plant, Facilities Management Service, for the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience includes tasks including the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks including the trades of Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter, and Mechanic. Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various plumbing devices, electromechanical devices, doors, doors and door alignment, and hardware, locking devices, wall hung fixtures, furniture, shelving, acoustical ceilings, wall repair, floor covering, mechanical devices (such as: washers, dryers, stoves), pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, ventilation equipment, medical gas service outlets and various mechanical control devices. Read, write and interpret technical information, wiring diagrams and manufacturers data. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measuring Instruments Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Duties include but are not limited to: Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various plumbing devices such as pipe repair and flush meters. Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various types of electromechanical devices such as electrical motors, switches, light bulbs, ballasts, and wall receptacles. Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various doors, door alignments and hardware (including closers), locking devices, wall hung fixtures, furniture, shelving, acoustic ceiling tiles, wall repair, floor coverings and other miscellaneous items necessary to maintain the facility. Perform tasks such as clearing drains and waste lines. Fabricate from various wood, metal, plastic and laminate products using tools commonly associated with the carpentry trade including, but not limited to, tape measures, saws, grinders and sanders. Inspect, install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair various types of mechanical devices including but not limited to; appliances (ex; washers, dryers, stoves, etc.) pumps, compressors, vacuum pumps, ventilation equipment, medical gas service outlets and various mechanical control devices. Performs maintenance and repair work to identify malfunctions or non-functions and then proceed with corrective action when work is assigned through logbooks, work orders, engineer drawings, wiring diagrams or orally. Comply with all prescribed safety procedures and practices. Performs regularly scheduled preventive maintenance. Select and safely use proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. Installs, maintains, troubleshoot and repair various types of equipment in operation at the facility. Troubleshoot problems in mechanical, plumbing and electrical equipment to maintain the facility in safe operational conditions. Performs carpentry work using tape measures. Use and interpret readings from various electrical measuring instruments such as amprobes & multi-meters. Interprets technical information, wiring diagrams and manufacturers data to install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment Provide labor services that may include work order desk coverage to answer phones, vendor escort, driving to suppliers to pick up materials, snow removal, cleaning, or other functions on an urgent need type basis. Lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, select best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul. Work Schedule: Possible Shifts-Monday - Friday 7:00am-4:00pm, 3:30pm-12:00am, 12:00am-8:30am Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD40932A Physical Effort : Incumbent may install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment or components from ladders, platforms and scaffolding and in cramped or hard to reach areas. This can require walking long distances, prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and climbing in uncomfortable or tiring positions. Incumbent may be subject to bruises, cuts and scrapes, burns and other minor injuries. Incumbent must be medically able to wear a respirator. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. He/she occasionally may handle materials and equipment that weighs in excess of 50 lbs. Working Conditions: The working conditions vary with the environment. It may be inside or outside, and is generally dirty, dusty, greasy, and may be in inclement weather. The incumbent may be assigned to work in areas where certain potentially harmful physical and/or chemical agents are present such as in the research labs. To ensure employee safety and health, personnel protection programs are maintained. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualification for duty. Working conditions for the incumbent vary from sensitive patient care areas such as the Marrow Transplant Unit (MTU) to the engineering Shops and to outdoor areas in all weather conditions.
