This position is for a Laundry Machine Operator in the Textile Care Processing Facility (TCPF) of Environmental Management Service and contributes in the processing of textiles for patient care areas within the Medical Center, White City and the Wolf Creek Job Corps. The incumbent will mainly work in the clean area of the TCPF but at times will also work in the soiled area.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/12/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Supervisor without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes: the ability to recognize various-types of fabrics; must be able to use correct drying cycles and temperatures for various fabrics to ensure efficient operation of machines; knowledge of correct wash compounds and formulas to ensure that the proper chemical balance is being maintained during different-types of formulas; must know the loading capacities of dryers and washer/extractors to load machines to optimum capacity and to support energy conservation measures; general knowledge of different fabrics and use of proper wash formulas and temperatures to maintain quality and quantity of production (these knowledges are applied under the close direction of the washperson or Textile Care Supervisor); operates dryers, washer, conveyors and sling systems in a safe manner; ability to recognize the need for proper handling of isolation, operating room, and other hospital textiles; knowledge of established infection control procedures; and must be capable of functioning as a team member and work cooperatively with other employees and staff. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements: Must be capable of lifting loads exceeding 50 pounds. Frequently the employee must bend at the waist repetitively loading and unloading machines. He/she must pull and push heavy loads of wet and dry textiles both in carts and slings frequently weighing over100 pounds. Work requires continuous standing and walking on hard concrete floors. Considerable physical effort is required pulling wet textiles from machines. Working Conditions: Work is accomplished inside a building in a hot, humid, noisy environment. The incumbent is exposed to the possibility of bruises. Will be subject to unpleasant odors, soiled and wet textiles, lint, and wet floors. Temperatures in the work area may very from extreme heat in the summer to cold drafts in the winter. Will be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
Loads and unloads a 450lb. dryer and a 110lb. dryer with wet wash using overhead rail slings and carts for loading, unloading, and movement of textiles in various stages of processing to the finishing areas. Selects proper temperature and drying cycle for various fabrics. The incumbent is responsible for the operation of a 65-lb.washer/extractor located in the clean area. He/she follows the proper sudsing, bleaching, rinsing and souring operations under the guidance of the Textile Care Supervisor. As the washing process progresses, he/she checks water levels, temperatures, various gauges, valves and safety devices to insure the wash is processed through the correct cycles. Monitors loads to ensure proper utilization of equipment and economical operation. Coordinates workflow with the washperson to ensure maximum use of dryers by selecting proper types of textiles to maintain adequate quantities and classifications to the finishing textiles. Verifies TCPF lists and identification of items against items received. Unidentified items willbe marked and effective control measures applied to insure timely return of clothing to proper party. In the absence of higher grade machine operators will be required to perform washroom duties and operate washer/extractors consistent with their various load characteristics. Cleans and maintains worksite and equipment using air hoses, brushes, brooms and central vacuum units. Duties include regular cleaning of lint collectors in the machines and on the outside of the building which requires working from steps and ladders. Performs other TCPF tasks during slack periods or periods of leave by other employees.
