This position is organizationally aligned under the Environmental Management Service, Textile Care/Laundry Section and is located at the William S. Middleton VA Medical Center, Madison, WI.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work performed requires incumbent to stand and/or walk continuously on hard-surfaced floors. Incumbent must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull, reach, and exercise normal body movements to perform laundry duties. Incumbent must have the physical strength to operate and control the various types of industrial equipment used in the laundry department. Employee must have adequate grip strength to pull wet linen from machines. Incumbent needs strength and stamina for performing heavy tasks for long periods of time and is continuously bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching while performing daily tasks. Employee must be physically able to lift items weighing 50 pounds or more, pushing/pulling linen carts weighing up to 500 pounds, and continuously dump bags of soiled linen as required. WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent will perform all linen duties indoors, in a well-lit, well ventilated, and climate-controlled environment. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises from carts and linen processing and finishing equipment. Incumbent will also be subject to noise from laundry equipment. Employee is exposed to dirt, bacteria, disagreeable odors, and may be subjected to contagious diseases associated with hospital settings. Employee will be required to wear the proper personal protective equipment when exposed to soiled linen and hazardous drugs in the performance of laundry duties. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Serves as a Laundry Machine Operator Leader for a crew of up to 10 employees at various skill levels, positions and grades within the laundry section of the Environmental Management Service Line (EMS). Opens the department and starts all equipment prior to the arrival of other employees for the workday, as well as shutting down and closing the department after all employees have left for the day. Employs basic washing techniques and formulas for soiled laundry in conjunction with the effect of water temperatures, cleaning compounds, and the laundering effect on a variety of fabrics. Operates industrial laundry equipment including but not limited to washing machines, dryers, flatwork ironer, automatic folding machines, cart dumper, rail systems, conveyors, and the robotic system to deliver carts to wards. Retrieves soiled uniforms and scrubs from the uniform room and/or locker rooms. Sorts all linen by classification and checks all pockets to ensure no foreign objects are present that may damage linen or equipment during the wash process. Coordinates the flow of linen from the soiled side through to the clean side, processing in order of priority need. Inspects chemical room for leaks and ensures proper operation of all chemical pumps. Ensures that the quality and quantity of work performed meet established standards. Observes team members to ensure that supplies and equipment are properly utilized to avoid waste or damage. Ensures all textile care personnel perform daily cleaning of equipment as well as each employee's assigned area in an effective manner. Reviews work in progress and completed work to confirm that instructions are followed, proper procedures are applied, progress and production are satisfactory, and/or that deadlines have been met. Performs with a minimum of supervision, makes effective and efficient decisions, and acts on own initiative. Performs other duties as assigned.
