This position is located at the William S. Middleton VA Medical Center, Madison, WI (607) - a Level 1b Complexity VHA Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Environmental Management Service, Textile Care/Laundry Section. Incumbent will serve as a Laundry Machine Operator Leader for a crew of up to 10 employees at various skill levels, positions and grades within the laundry section of the Environmental Management Service Line (EMS).
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/13/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work performed requires incumbent to stand and/or walk continuously on hard-surfaced floors. Incumbent must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull, reach, and exercise normal body movements to perform laundry duties. Incumbent must have the physical strength to operate and control the various types of industrial equipment used in the laundry department. Employee must have adequate grip strength to pull wet linen from machines. Incumbent needs strength and stamina for performing heavy tasks for long periods of time and is continuously bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching while performing daily tasks. Employee must be physically able to lift items weighing 50 pounds or more, pushing/pulling linen carts weighing up to 500 pounds, and continuously dump bags of soiled linen as required.
Major Duties: When designated, incumbent assumes the responsibilities of an Acting Supervisor during periods of supervisor's absence Responsible for opening the department and starting all equipment prior to the arrival of other employees for the workday, as well as shutting down and closing the department after all employees have left for the day. Opening and closing procedures and of systems including the TEA reuse water system, flatwork ironer, small piece and blanket folders, washers, and dryers Employing basic washing techniques and formulas for soiled laundry in conjunction with the effect of water temperatures, cleaning compounds, and the laundering effect on a variety of fabrics Operating industrial laundry equipment including but not limited to washing machines, dryers, flatwork ironer, automatic folding machines, cart dumper, rail systems, conveyors, and the robotic system to deliver ATS carts to wards. Coordinating the flow of linen from the soiled side through to the clean side, processing in order of priority need. Inspecting chemical room for leaks and ensures proper operation of all chemical pumps. Continually monitors the operations of the textile care processing facility and reports any malfunctions, significant needs for repairs, safety hazards, time or assistance required, or job- related problems to the Supervisor or Manager. Provides on-the-job training to other laundry personnel and/or patients through the Incentive Therapy/ Compensated Work Therapy Programs. Observes team members to ensure that supplies and equipment are properly utilized to avoid waste or damage Reviews work in progress and completed work to confirm that instructions are followed, proper procedures are applied, progress and production are satisfactory, and/or that deadlines have been met. Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 12:00pm-8:30pm and Friday 9:00am-5:30pm Promotion Potential: This position is set at the full performance level.
