The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic will function within the HVAC section of Facilities Management, Engineering Service.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Licensure: Applicants must have and maintain an EPA universal refrigeration license. Note: Please include a copy of current, valid EPA universal refrigeration license with your application. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Preferred Experience: Fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair sheet metal products, such as ducts and duct fittings. Welding equipment to join sheet metal parts inspecting, assembling, and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces. Operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal. Installing ducting, and indoor air quality products consistent with industry standards.
The duties of the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, include but are not limited to: Install/maintain/repair/modify various, and sometimes complex, HVAC/R equipment and DDC controls in the support of medical and research needs as to help facilitate the ongoing support to the VA Medical Facility. Such item are in the form of medical HVAC/R support equipment, large commercial air handling units, air compressors, air drying equipment, exhaust fans for general, restroom, kitchen, laboratories and infectious control exhaust units. Monitors, repairs and reports to multiple services within the medical center while supporting negative air pressure rooms for air-borne illness for infectious patient care. Surveys proposed work to determine resource requirements. Prepares cost estimates for in-service work to be performed. Coordinates with other skilled trades when needed. Fabricates and installs sheet metal duct-work. Performs pre- acceptance inspections of all incoming HVAC/R systems and support equipment. Performs electrical troubleshooting and repair as to relate to air conditioning and support equipment. Uses wire schematics when available, if not available incumbent will have the skills and knowledge to trace out correct power and draw his own schematics to place with equipment. Ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations for refrigerants and hazardous materials. Perform recurring maintenance on systems and components. Uses drawings and schematics to analyze and isolate system malfunctions. Repairs or replaces faulty components or modifies equipment with substitution components for specific needs or to increase efficiency. Maintains tools and equipment and calibrates testing equipment to ensure precise accuracy. Duties will include the ability to communicate to and through, the chain of command. This may be performed by oral, written or electronic correspondence through a computer. i.e. - VISTA or MAXIMO work order systems. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: First Shift (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) or Second Shift (3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.), shift to be determined at selection Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD93810A Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Considerable physical exertion required when lifting, moving, or transporting heavy or awkward equipment. Must be able to perform for lengthy periods in cold or damp areas; on concrete floors, in cramped quarters and in tiring positions such as crouching, stooping, squatting, or kneeling and climbing ladders. Exposed to hot and cold temperatures for various periods of time. Fumes from refrigerants are a frequent hazard. Exposed to electric shock, burns, and possible injuries from ruptured gas or liquid lines. Cuts, bruises, and scratches frequently incurred on hands.
