About the Position: This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is first-shift in a fast-paced hospital anatomic pathology lab and office environment. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Basic Requirement for Anatomic Pathology Specialist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes serving in a clinical laboratory environment; assisting in the development and revision of SOP's; inking of gross surgical specimens, dissecting and submitting representative sections; and preparing slides by processing tissue blocks, embedding tissue, cutting, staining and coverslipping. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Pathology, Biology, Anatomy, Chemistry, or any related field in science. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Although not required, ASCP Certification is preferred.
Maintain current knowledge of all laboratory-related accreditation, regulatory requirements, other applicable guidelines and directives published by higher command authority.
Develop/maintain a professional quality system model approach to the performance improvement efforts of the laboratory.
Establish/maintain an audit program to assess critical points in the provision of laboratory support to health care providers and their patients.
Perform the full range of advanced Histopathology/ Histologist/ Technician’s duties to include processing autopsy, biopsy and surgical specimens for histopathological analysis.
Assist with preparation for laboratory inspections by periodically assessing current operational practices against the accreditation inspection checklist for each section.
Provide oversight for the proficiency-testing program required by laboratory accreditation agencies.
Develop/assist others in developing laboratory performance improvement projects and evaluation studies.
Coordinate laboratory investigations and responses to all Quality Assurance/Risk Management complaints, health care provider complaints, and patient complaints.
Reference lab send-outs and billing reviews, authenticating charges.
