Job Description:

The Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the A/C Section of Engineering Service and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, modification, troubleshooting, replacement of parts, and overhauling of all air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems, domestic and commercial, throughout the Medical Center.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Duties include but are not limited to the following equipment and systems: Refrigerators, walk-in and reach-in coolers, deep freezers, ice cream cabinets, ice producing machines, water coolers, drinking water chillers, smoke heaters, heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cold food trucks, air handlers including their blower assemblies, package-split and window air conditioning units, chilled water chillers up to 50 ton capacity located throughout the Medical Center. Also parts such as expansion valves, filter and filter beds, evaporator and condenser coils, motors and compressors (up to 480 volt, 3 phase) thermostatic motor and safety controls, refrigerant controls, automatic defrost controls, relays, motor overload protection, capacitors, motor starters, belts, bearings, blower assemblies, gaskets, hinges, etc. Performs preventive maintenance to the above in strict accordance with the preventive maintenance program including the checking and adjusting of refrigerant levels, refrigerant pressures, refrigerant controls and temperatures Balance HVAC systems utilizing specialized air balancing equipment such as FPM AND CFM meters and hoods along with calculating and adjusting for proper flow. Utilizes refrigerant reclaiming equipment to prevent the release of refrigerant to the atmosphere. In an emergency the incumbent will perform repairs to equipment, buildings and utility systems throughout the Medical Center as directed. Familiarity and use of a variety of test and repair equipment such as: voltmeters, ohmmeters, ampmeters, pressure gauges, pipe threaders, soldering equipment, measuring devices, basic hand tools, etc. Layout work, read and interpret blueprints, manufacturers' schematics, wiring diagrams, install equipment and systems, utilized maintenance and repair diagrams, instructions and be familiar with principles of mechanical, pneumatic and electrical control systems. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:00am-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD07812A Physical Requirements: Continuous stopping, kneeling, lifting, climbing, standing, bending and reaching is done in the course of a days work which results in prolonged muscular exertion. Incumbent is required to handle objects and materials weighing excess of 40 lbs. Operation of all power tools require alert and skillful handling. Working Conditions: Incumbent is subjected to excessive heat and cold at times and is subject to possible cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, loud noises, etc. Work requires the use of overhead ladders, scaffold or platforms. There is exposure to oil, grease, use of solvents, etc. Much equipment is cumbersome and fixed which requires it to be worked on in place, in cramped quarters. In emergencies may be required to work outside in all weather conditions.
