Job Description:
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Perform exacting and complex radar approach control duties in the Level IV Cairns Army Radar Control facility located in Fort Rucker, Alabama. This is a TERM position NTE 3 YEARS. TERM appointments may be extended beyond of 6 years, up to 8 years with DoD approval.

Specialized Experience GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes: Working as an Air Traffic Controller in a Radar Approach Control facility issuing control instructions and advice to pilots in the vicinity of airports to assure proper separation of aircraft and to expedite their safe and efficient movement; Directing and coordinating the radar control of aircraft in assigned airspace and performing radar air traffic control duties in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules, regulations and radar procedures governing the movement of air traffic; and proficiency in the operation of Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) or similar radar processing ATC equipment and Flight Data Input/Output (FDIO) equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Specialized Experience GS-13: One year of specialized experience which includes: Independently working as an Air Traffic Controller in a Radar Approach Control facility issuing control instructions and advice to pilots in the vicinity of airports to assure proper separation of aircraft and to expedite their safe and efficient movement; Directing and coordinating the radar control of aircraft in assigned airspace and performing radar air traffic control duties in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules, regulations and radar procedures governing the movement of air traffic; and proficiency in the operation of Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) or similar radar processing ATC equipment and Flight Data Input/Output (FDIO) equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS12). Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11 / GS-12).
Speak clearly and at an appropriate rate of speed while providing instructions to pilots and/or Controllers.
Provide instructions and guidance to aircraft to ensure safe, expeditious flow of traffic. This can include separation, speed, altitude, weather, vectors, etc.
Coordinate with other ATC Facilities and Aircraft for the Arrival, Departure, in flight status of Aircraft.
Use RADAR equipment to provide guidance to Aircraft, ensure the proper operation of equipment.
Provide timely instructions and/or assistance for aircraft during emergencies, or equipment malfunctions.
