CAVHS is seeking a Staff Physician to treat and supervise clinical care of Veterans with pulmonary disease and critical care medical disorders. The incumbent will be a Clinician Educator in the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and should have a strong interest in critical care medicine, lung cancer, COPD, general pulmonary disease and lung research.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. The incumbent will also participate in Clinician Education in the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and should have an interest in critical care medicine, lung cancer, COPD, general pulmonary disease and lung research. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Care for patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit Provides in/outpatient pulmonary and pulmonary disease consultative service Provides bronchoscopy and other invasive procedures Teach and clinically supervise interns, residents, and/or fellows rotating through the MICU and Pulmonary Consult Services and Specialty Care Service Manages a variety of pulmonary diseases including chronic obstructive lung disease, interstitial lung disease, asthma, sarcoidosis, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and others Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with pulmonary diseases and critical care disorders May admit ICU patients, as the primary attending for patients with pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine disorders including management acute respiratory failure requiring mechanically assisted ventilation, management of COVID-19, pneumonia and ARDS, management of sepsis and shock, and others Interpret pulmonary function, methacholine challenge, cardiopulmonary exercise, and oximetry tests Consult and support to the nurse practitioners assigned to Medicine Service Provide quality care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease and care at the end of life Provide long term treatment/monitoring of patients with a range of pulmonary disorders Order appropriate pulmonary testing to diagnose sleep and pulmonary conditions Initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings Keep informed of developments in the treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education Include patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing goals related to health education and treatment planning Implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex pulmonary and critical care medicine care needs Order durable medical equipment therapies used in pulmonary and sleep medicine specialty Provide pulmonary care through e-consults, telephone, video clinics, etc. Participate in multidisciplinary activities with respiratory therapists and other health provider Administrative Duties are but not limited to the following: May serve as ICU Medical Director for the ICU Participate in the educational programs for the ICU personnel and medical staff Participate in monitoring the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care and quality assurance programs and chart reviews Attend committee and Medical Service staff meetings Develop and update policies and procedures Complete medical records appropriately Conduct Medicine Grand Rounds and other lectures for staff education Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00- 4:30 with rotating weekends. Occasional travel may be required for staffing clinic in local CBOCs. No overnight travel.
