This position is located at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement,08/26/2025. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to operate motor vehicles safely and effectively. Evidence of this potential can be shown through work, training, or relevant activities that establish proficiency in motor vehicle operation, including understanding of safety protocols and proper handling of different types of vehicles. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c). SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles. The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and handles items without assistance weighing up to 80 lbs. Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads where there are risks of serious accidents. The work is performed outside with exposure to a variety of weather conditions. The work area may be dirty, dusty, wet, and greasy. Incumbent is subject to the possibility of cuts, bruises, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation of harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, etc. The incumbent will be required to wear proper personnel protective equipment (PPE) during assigned tasks. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drugs use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, replacing air-filters, interior lights, tire pressure, hose connections, and washing vehicles. The incumbent keeps the assigned equipment clean by washing or steam cleaning and ensure that no dirt is deposited on the roadways or cemetery grounds when transporting these materials. Operates wheeled vehicles, wheel-mounted tractors, and engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler-type tractions. Drives vehicles in restricted traffic environments on government installations, public roads, and highways. Operates vehicles such as backhoes (GVW 32,000), track excavator (GVW 11,725), passenger transportation vehicles, pickup trucks, stake and dump trucks (18,000 GVW), street sweepers, and rollers (4-ton vibrator). Incumbent is required to operate multiple controls simultaneously to complete assigned tasks. Vehicles are operated over flat and/or uneven terrain, over improved and unimproved roads, and through congested areas on both short and long hauls. Knowledgeable of securing loads with chains, tie downs and straps for over the road transportation. Works within tight areas that require skill to avert unnecessary damage to headstones and markers. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.
