Job Description:

The Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Lab) position is located at the Kernersville, NC VA Medical Center. Cath Lab/EP Technicians at this level functions proficiently in Cardiac Cath Lab. They may be responsible for ordering all Cath Lab and EP Lab.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/12/2025. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: There are no specific education requirements for this occupation. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition. Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor advanced procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab, EP Lab and Interventional Radiology to include, but not limited to rotoblation, intravascular ultrasound, FFR/iFR and permanent pacemaker insertions, AICD insertions. Promote safe practices and standards, maintain knowledge of equipment operation, adhere to equipment safety guidelines and report any malfuctions. Monitor and evaluate patient stability during procedures, assist with treatment under supervision, and assist with advance procedures. Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are always ready; recognize and respond to potential emergency situations. Preferred Experience: Interventional procedures to include cardiac, vascular and radiology. Certification. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is preferred.. Assignment. This represents the full performance level. Cardiac catheterization/Electrophysiology Lab technicians at this level function as full members of the Cardiac Invasive Team. They scrub, circulate, operate equipment, etc., on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including procedures, but not limited to intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for very critical patients. They mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiopulmonary technology students on cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the GS-08 level. Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. The walking will often require carrying supplies or pushing carts and equipment. Standing will require holding patients or stocking supplies. This may occupy half of the work day and will hence be considered demanding physical activity. A certain mechanical dexterity is required in the replacement of parts and the repair of equipment to restore or maintain operability after faults are identified.
The Cardiac Cath Lab Technician executes position responsibilities the demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex systems including the following: Ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor advanced procedures to include, but not limited to intravascular ultrasound, FFR/iFR,PCI, permanent pacemaker insertions and AICD insertions. Promote safe practices and standards, maintain knowledge of equipment operation, adhere to equipment safety guidelines and report any malfunctions. Knowledge and understanding of ECG and pressure waveforms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart, and forewarn the physician of an impending life-threatening situation. Promote safe practices and standards, maintain knowledge of equipment operation. Completes and maintains accurate records and logs for the procedure performed. Assists with inventory management. Assists in pre-and post area such as sheath removal and radial brand management. Mentors and supports co-workers and trainees. Performs and maintains assigned point-of-care testing and annual competencies. Participates and completes continuing education and annual required education Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
