Job Description:

The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports. Incumbent drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must handle patients, both litter and wheelchair, in loading and unloading from vans and buses. Incumbent must be capable of loading and transporting patients to and from bed, to and from litter in private homes, in tight surroundings, through narrow hallways, and in difficult loading areas thereby increasing physical effort. There is considerable strenuous effort exerted in performing these duties. The incumbent must be able to change tires in emergent situation. Tire/rim combination may be in excess of fifty lbs. Incumbent is often required to lift and transport patients Weighing in excess of 250 lbs. Incumbent experiences a variety of working positions, e.g., stooping, bending, kneeling, etc., along with a variety of other fatigue-producing factors. Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic conditions on public roads and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The incumbent drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system. Incumbent is required to work indoors and outdoors experiencing a variety of weather conditions. Incumbent is exposed to heat, cold, dust, rain, etc. The incumbent is also at possible risk due to direct patient contact while caring for and transporting patients.
The duties of this position include, but not limited to: Responsible for safe transport of veterans and other passengers authorized to ride in government vehicles. Operates Motor Vehicles requiring a CDL w/Passenger endorsement. Drives automotive vehicles such as passenger sedans, passenger vans, passenger buses, pickup trucks and heavy duty trucks with GVWR not exceed 23,999. Makes sure that vehicle is kept in good repair inside and outside. Completes preventative maintenance checks on vehicles prior to operation. Performs monthly written reports of Motor Vehicle Trips Logs and Motor Vehicle Trip Tickets. Obeys all traffic signage, signals and lights. Have a working knowledge of traffic regulations and overloading vehicle by its gross vehicle weight. Able to load and unload patients in a safe a manner and location. Able to read and follow road signs. Be able to operate and maneuver vehicles with manual, air and power brakes without jostling passengers. Be able to select alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic, delays and hazards by using map reading skills. Driving proficiency in the terms of safe and expeditious completion of tasks. Be able to perform operational checks such as checking tire pressure, checking fluids, door operation, etc.. Knowledgeable of hybird and non-gasoline vehicles. Work Schedule: Tour of duty 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, schedule could varies on agency needed.
