Job Description:

The Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center, located in Saginaw, Michigan, is recruiting for a outpatient general Cardiologist. The Physician - Cardiologist position will function in our Specialty Care Service and requires extensive knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices in the field of Cardiology.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certified or eligible in Cardiology, having completed an appropriate residency or fellowship. Physical Requirements: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects. This could include moving objects such as pieces of equipment and assistance in moving clients.
Duties include, but are not limited to: This Cardiologist will be assigned to Saginaw VA Main facility. May occasionally be assigned to the Saginaw Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) as designated by the ACOS of Specialty Service and in collaboration with CBOC leadership. Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses cardiac diseases, prevention, and health promotion issues of the Veteran population. Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, which allows for consultation, collaboration, or referral. Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term cardiac healthcare issues Recognizes abnormalities and provides services and treatment as directed by protocols and makes referrals to other disciples and services as indicated. Educates patients about preventative care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments to enhance awareness of health issues and relevant services. Ability to communicate clearly and in a supportive manner with patients and or family regarding condition, prognosis, health needs and available services. Extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques and practices in the field of Cardiology. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationship with professional staff, local officials, and the public. Keep abreast of current research and incorporate relevant findings into specific areas of clinical practice. Ability to manage disorders of the heart (includes medical diagnosis & treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease) with competencies including cardiology consultation, ECG, Holter interpretation, Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE), Exercise Stress Testing, Nuclear stress testing & Transthoracic Echocardiogram interpretation. Cardiologist will diagnose, treat, and manage patients with cardiac diseases according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods, and techniques. Will provide services such as outpatient examinations, consultation services related to cardiology, management of patients with current treatment regiment, and admission status as necessary. May be asked to participate in facility special projects and teach Medical Residents and students from affiliated universities and other facility affiliates as well as other Clinical Programs.
