In 2021, Congress approved federal funding for a new Veterans Hospital in Tulsa which will be the first hospital to be built under the Communities Helping Invest through Property and Improvements Needed for Veterans Act of 2016. Basic Requirements. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Experience and/or Education Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Certification. None. Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Foreign Education. To be creditable, education completed outside the U.S. must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. GS-09 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Assistant Chief Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to plan and project staffing needs and requirements. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds. Ensures strict compliance with device-specific IFUs, manufacturer's guidelines, VHA Directive 1116, HSPA, and AAMI standards. Possesses expert knowledge of sterilizer operation, troubleshooting, and biological testing interpretation. Oversees storage, transport, and delivery of sterile instruments; ensures environmental controls maintain sterility. Directs complete endoscope reprocessing for GI, ENT, Pulmonary, and OR areas, including equipment operation, manual cleaning, and bioburden testing. Oversees high-level disinfection (HLD) processes for devices requiring low-temperature reprocessing, ensuring testing and standard compliance. Performs daily administrative and personnel management for SPS functions including Decontamination, Endoscope Reprocessing, Preparation and Sterilization, and Quality Assurance. Develops and maintains a QA program through product assessment, biological testing, and random sampling to ensure high-quality outcomes. Participates in planning of pilot programs, special studies, and VA initiatives with potential nationwide impact. Serves as Contracting Officer Representative (COR) in collaboration with the SPS Chief to oversee service contracts related to sterile processing. Assists with procurement and purchasing of capital and non-capital equipment, including instrumentation for the OR and specialty clinics; prepares 2237 requests as needed. Supports Equipment Inventory Listing (EIL) management and ensures all equipment is accounted for. Ensures compliance with environmental standards for temperature, humidity, and airflow as outlined in VHA directives. Collaborates with SPS Chief and Infection Control on developing and revising policies governing sterile processing and decontamination. Participates in or advises the following committees: RMD Committee (Co-Chair), Infection Control, Environment of Care, Surgical Staff. Attends Clinical Product Review, Health Care Delivery, Quality Safety and Value, and Capital Equipment Committees in the absence of the SPS Chief. Directly supervises a team including 2 SPS Supervisors and approximately 20 non-supervisory employees (GS-3 to GS-7). Oversees SPS administrative, clinical supply, and instrument production functions to ensure smooth integration with system-wide services. Responsible for evaluating work performance, writing functional statements, and conducting performance appraisals. Resolves complaints, approves leave, recommends promotions, reassignments, and awards. Coordinates SPS functions across the Health Care System; monitors quality, safety, and appropriateness of sterile processing operations. Assists the SPS Chief in managing labor-management relations and fosters collaboration with union representatives.
