The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center Detail Chief of Staff serves as a member of the senior executive (quadrad) leadership team and provides administrative, clinical and programmatic leadership, ensuring the delivery of high quality clinical care, professional education and medical research at the Medical Center. In addition to making clinical decisions, the Chief of Staff participates in organizational planning to achieve the mission and vision of the Medical Center.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. The Detail Chief of Staff serves as advisor to the Medical Center Director on issues related to provision of direct patient care and promotes the development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment. The Chief of Staff ensures that medical staff practitioners are credentialed and privileged in accordance with VA and Joint Commission requirements and monitors staff compliance with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations. The Chief of Staff has supervisory line authority for all clinical services and is responsible for recruitment and retention and effective management and operation of clinical staff.
