Job Description:

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Services Group in Baltimore, MD. This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year, can be extended up to 5 years total an or can be converted to permanent without further consideration.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: * Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREENOUT) * Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc. * Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) * Use of measuring instruments* Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc., (includes blueprint reading) * Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment * Knowledge of materials National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will be responsible for performing a variety of routine rigging tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels in the connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include: Lifting, moving and carrying heavy items, such as equipment, furniture and similar loads or works with journeymen Riggers in moving and placing machinery, structural members of ships, major equipment and similar loads. Estimating weight and center of gravity of load to be moved; planning weight distribution and load maneuvering; bracing, cushioning and otherwise preparing load and attaching appropriate lifting gear. Installing beam clamps, gin poles, gallows frames, and other supporting structures; and using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, rollers, and similar equipment as necessary to move and position heavy items. Installing or repairing rigging on ships, such as mast and antenna rigging, small boat handling gear, and windlass and winch rigging.
