About the Position: This position is a Pathologists' Assistant in the Anatomic Pathology Service, Department of Pathology, located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. The laboratory is CAP accredited. This positions regular tour of duty will be dayshift; however, the incumbent will be required to be available to work later dayshift hours, such as 9:00-5:30 with weekends and holidays on as needed basis to meet mission requirements. Basic Requirement for Anatomic Pathology Specialist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes serving as a Pathologist's Assistant for an Anatomical Pathology laboratory performing duties such as accessioning, dissection, and describing gross anatomic features of human tissue surgical specimens for histological processing and/or performing autopsies; performing gross analysis of anatomic pathology specimens (which may include biopsies and small resections to larger, complex cancer cases); and facilitating training/didactic instruction regarding gross analysis or anatomic pathology specimens. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Although not required, successful completion of an accredited Pathologist's Assistant program with national certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent is highly desired.
Gross simple and complex anatomical specimens.
Assists with resident, intern and student training.
Provides oversight of quality assurance functions to ensure the quality of technical work performed.
Assist with autopsies and with teaching residents to perform autopsies.
Monitor the quality of laboratory services and patient care pertaining to specimen receipt, accessioning, grossing, tissue harvesting, storage and disposal.
Assist in the development, revision, and integration of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Anatomic Pathology Service.
