The Phoenix VA Healthcare System is seeking an energetic full-time permanent Hospitalist. The Hospitalist reports to the Chief, Hospitalist Service. A Hospitalist routinely provides inpatient care, both as a primary provider as well as in a consultative role. Additionally the Hospitalist is responsible for educating house staff and medical students. Hospitalists function in inter-disciplinary teams (including Pharmacists, Social Workers, Nutrition support) to coordinate care for inpatients.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, us or both hands, walking (up to 4 hours), standing (up to 4 hours) kneeling (up to 1 hour), near vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid may be permitted), working closely with others.

This position requires that the Hospitalist coordinates, monitors, and has the working knowledge of inpatient and consultative services. Hospitalists must be accessible and available to house staff, medical students, and other ancillary staff for clinical overnight as needed. Hospitalists are responsible for integrating the core values and mission of the facility into inpatient care services. Hospitalists assist the Section and Service chiefs in the areas of: 1. Resource Utilization 2. Accomplishment of local, VISN and national goals. 3. Safety The Hospitalist may also participate in administrative and quality improvement activities. He/she assists administration and other staff in policy development and compliance with Joint Commission (JC), and other applicable local and national standards. The incumbent serves on committees as assigned by the Section Chief and Medical Center management. Responsibilities include and are not limited to: The incumbent is assigned as a clinician, with responsibilities to the Inpatient Medicine Service under the guidance and direction of the Chief of the Hospitalist section. The incumbent participates, oversees and collaborates to ensure that all applicable clinical functions (which may include inpatient care, consultative medicine, cross cover as needed throughout the hospital including the Community Living Center(CLC)) are performed. Hospitalists are tasked with providing timely and courteous service to all veterans seeking care and that the results are made readily available to the referring practitioners. The Hospitalist collaborates to ensure coverage when necessary in other inpatient areas when requested by Section Chief. The Hospitalist will perform bedside procedures as indicated by training/credentials as applicable. Work Schedule: 8:00am- 4:30pm
