This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of the Black Hills VA Medical Center. The Laundry Worker position oversees linen distribution section of the Textile Care facility.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Loaded carts can weigh up to 600 pounds and extreme caution must be exercised in moving carts to avoid injury to others or self and to physical plant. All duties are performed while standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping; and climbing on ladders. Moderate to heavy lifting, pushing and pulling is required when moving carts, loading and unloading carts, stocking the flow rack and cleaning. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to high temperatures and close, steamy or drafty conditions and subject to disagreeable odors and excreta from soiled or contaminated linens. Incumbent is exposed to constant noise from moving equipment, chemicals and close quarters.
Duties for the position include but are not limited to: Prepares and loads carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas. Reviews linen quotas. Handles telephone requests for additional linen and maintains records of all such requests. Performs all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section. Operates the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; and operates industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher. Unloads industrial washers and operates lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems. Sorts soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and follows all established procedures. Performs routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); and inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc. Maintains production counts and inventory records of all supplies. Follows established safety and infection control procedures; and keeps the assigned work area clean and free of debris. Performs other related duties as assigned.
