This position is located within the Facility Management Service at the Martinsburg, WV VAMC. As a Maintenance Mechanic performing tasks involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Martinsburg VAMC building services that include plumbing, laundry, kitchen, and steam piping systems. Also performs troubleshooting, inspections, maintenance, and repairs to industrial laundry equipment, electrical and electronic controls, plumbing, and all laundry ancillary equipment.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Duties include but are not limited too the following: Maintains, troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs washer extractors, dryers, tumblers, marking machines, hot patch machines, stamping machines, sewing machines, flat-work irons, sheet spreaders, and blanket folding machines. Repairs and/or replaces kitchen equipment to include but not limited to: dishwashers, pot and pan machines, conveyor set-up lines, dirty dish conveyors, and steam cookers. Weld either by electric or acetylene on different types of metal such as cast iron, steel, aluminum, or cooper. Have the ability to braze and solder with an iron to torch to mend, repair, or install equipment. Install, modify, and/or repair new and existing utility systems to include but not limited to: fire sprinkler systems, sewage and gas systems, vacuum and high pressure air systems, high pressure steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, and potable water distribution systems. Install, modify, and/or repair and adjust new and existing building utility equipment to include but not limited to: waste closets, tubs, showers, lavatories, steam and hot water heating equipment, pressure reducing stations, circulating pumps, steam and electric water heaters. Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Install, modify and repair systems by locating and tapping main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope Determine and install valves, traps, and unions needed for the proper operation of systems. Must become certified, through station training, in ASSE Medical Gas Maintenance 6040 and Medical Gas Installer 6010. Become certified as a West Virginia Groundwater Distribution Operator. Perform daily rounds on equipment and records readings in accordance with policies and procedures. Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics on all equipment as assigned and make repairs as necessary and required. Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance. Write, complete, and close work orders as required. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and diagrams. Ability to select and use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment in the course of assignments and repairs. Perform repairs, i.e. rebuilding pumps, replacing items such as mechanical seals, bearings, valves, pipefittings, and sprinkler systems. Repairing insulation, re- packing valves and re-piping systems is also required along with various other repairs as determined by the Maintenance Shop Supervisor. On an occasional basis fabricates, assembles and installs sheet metal ducting systems for HVAC systems. Occasionally assembles, constructs, reconstructs, and makes repairs to metal furniture and other items pertaining to sheet metal work. . Occasionally install new equipment and systems that fall within the scope of journeyman level work as determined by Maintenance Shop Supervisor. Follow all accepted trade practices in the repair and operation of mechanical systems under their control. Perform various housekeeping functions and other duties, as assigned by the Maintenance Shop Supervisor or the Operations and Maintenance General Forman, as they relate to the overall mission of FMS and the Martinsburg VAMC. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD06736A Physical Requirements: Regular walking tours of the main hospital and outbuildings to conduct inspections of equipment which include some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing, and stooping. Maintenance and repairs frequently require manual labor and working in awkward and cramped positions in places such as attics and interstitial areas and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Frequent standing, walking, and climbing are required while checking equipment.
