This position is located at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC Indianapolis, IN within the Ambulatory Care (MAC) Service. The primary purpose of this position is to aid in a technical, specialized, or supportive nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis and/or treatment of patient illness or medical conditions. Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnosis/treat medical conditions.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Receives requests or instructions for procedures from medical or health care personnel; explains procedures, Monitoring vital signs. Maintaining patient records. Preferred experience in minor plastics, podiatry, dermatology and/or urology procedures. This position involves Unlicensed Assistive Medication Administration, VHA will be implementing following requirements by Feb 2026. *If you have any education, or certifications pertaining to the Healthcare field, please provide transcripts and or active certifications with your application* Must have at minimum high school diploma OR equivalent AND one OR more of the following: VA - approved specialty training/study course that is: Externally accredited; Relevant to the clinical service Includes a mechanism to ensure learner validation of knowledge Graduation from an accredited program or school relevant to the clinical service Six Semester hours in subjects related to the position. Nationally approved certification or registration from a professional organization that is applicable to their position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care 70% Duties and responsibilities of the Health Technician are varied and involve accomplishing both clinical and administrative tasks associated with the treatment and care of patients that present at a Specialty Care Clinic. The incumbent serves as a clinical associate in the team and participates in the assessment of physical, functional, spiritual, and psychosocial planning needs of patients assigned in collaboration with the provider and/or care team. Administrative Duties 30% Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit. Maintains patient's record/charts. Providers general clerical/administrative support coordination work for the unit. Accurately enters order and/or consults as approved through Specialty clinic Outpatient Protocols. Assists patients in contacting members of their Specialty Clinic team and/or navigating through the health care system. Support clinical flow to include but not limited to scrubbing provider panel, communicating with Specialty Care Clinic/ Medical Support Assistance for scheduling needs, pre-appointment check-in and clinical reminder review. Facilitates completion of medical documentation through communication with Specialty Clinic Team; to include FMLA, faxes, etc... Checks appointments and tests and coordinates all activities and appointments for the clinical areas, avoiding conflict in patient treatment plan. Supports Specialty Clinic through evaluating, answering, and sending messaging to appropriate care team members. Work Schedule: Full Time, 8-4:30pm Mon - Fri Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician - Ambulatory Care (MAC)/PD02908A Physical Requirements: The regular work pace ranges from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include walking, standing, bending, and reaching. Includes lifting and positioning patients in/onto exam position or on/off gurney, and/or wheelchair. The work requires specific, but common, above average physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients for examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common disabilities. Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic equipment or patients.
