This vacancy is for a WL - 5402-10,Boiler Plant Leader located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, CG ACADEMY PUBLIC WORKS SECTION in NEW LONDON, Connecticut.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION (SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT). KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC. OPERATION OF BOILER PLANT EQUIPMENT. TECHNICAL PRACTICES (THEORETICAL, PRECISE, ARTISTIC). USE OF MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATION, ETC. (OTHER THAN BLUEPRINT READING). DEXTERITY AND SAFETY. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will serve as a/an Boiler Plant Leader and be responsible for boiler plant operations, performing preventative and routine maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, performing tests, and analyzing results on a variety of equipment. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Operating number 6 oil fired boilers. Taking established pressure and temperature readings, operating pumps, burners and manual or automatic controls to supply 90 PSI steam pressure. Making scheduled and unscheduled rounds, checking condensate systems, feed pump systems, fuel oil system, chemical feed systems, air systems, and water in emulsifier systems. Making frequent checks of water levels, water temperatures, fuel oil temperatures, and burner operation. Repairing and maintaining large air conditioning systems that perform a variety of functions. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment.
