Job Description:
This position is located in the Transportation Section of the Engineering Service at VA Hudson Valley Health Care System - Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hospital in Montrose, NY. The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for providing all transportation assistance to the medical center, which include transporting patients and family members, supplies equipment, construction material, office and hospital furniture, and clean linen and uniforms.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Light physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls of motor vehicles. Physical effort is exerted in operating, turning, backing, and controlling heavier vehicles. Work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. Heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from others. Forklift operation requires moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot controls. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). You may be required to show your valid driver's license at the time of your interview.) IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Operating a variety of motor vehicles including cargo, van, trucks, and buses, which are gasoline or diesel powered with approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds and up to 32,000 pounds Transporting patients and family members, supplies, materials, or equipment throughout the medical center complex and the local public area Performing required operator maintenance; maintaining service records; completing delivery records, trip tickets; and completing accident report in case of accident Understanding the operations difficulties such as weight restrictions, various vehicle prohibitions on certain roads or areas, and rough terrain in order to haul equipment materials Loading and unloading crated and uncrated equipment, supplies, and parts from vehicles; uncrating material Checking, counting, and sorting material, stocking and palletizing material in closed or open storage Operating a forklift truck (of up to 10,000 or more pound capacity) in indoor warehouse or outside storage areas and on loading dock to load, unload, and store material Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 07:00 a.m. to 03:30 p.m. Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved
