Job Description:
This position is a Physiologist with the organizational title of Exercise Physiologist located in the Social Work and Intergrated Care. The primary purpose of the position is to function as Gerofit research and clinical program manager, to lead the activities of the program team, and to provide scientific, clinical, and technical knowledge and support to the Program. The Service functions within the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs.
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-11 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: You must possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included a least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology. Courses such as anatomy; cytology; invertebrate and vertebrate zoology; embryology; entomology; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; nutrition; genetics; and physiology may be used to meet the 24-semester-hour requirement in the basic animal sciences. Courses in physiology, animal or human physiology, cellular physiology, or courses that were well oriented toward animal or human physiology, e.g., some advanced courses in biochemistry, are qualifying as animal physiology courses. Courses in related fields such as cytology and microbiology (including microbial physiology) may also be qualifying, provided the course work dealt directly with the application of scientific principles underlying animal physiology, or with the methodology and techniques applied in animal physiology work. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION) IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC REQUIREMENT ABOVE, YOU MUST ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL REQUIPREMENTS: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. Qualifying specialized experience includes conducting and managing an exercise program tailored to individual patients, taking into consideration their age, health conditions, and physical functioning; selecting and administering physical performance measures for research and clinical activities; developing follow-up procedures to monitor participant progress; planning, developing and completing required documentation/paperwork/forms to applicable Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) for initial and continuing human subjects review. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.) ~OR~ EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: You must have successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position (as described above). (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION) ~OR~ COMBINATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. Physical Requirements: The work involves a wide range of physical demands from sedentary work in a standard office setting to moderate to heavy physical demands which include the ability to lead exercise classes, move exercise equipment, and transfer patients in an emergency setting. The work is performed in an office and/or Gerofit clinic setting requiring no special considerations beyond accepted standards of safety. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Plans and sustains a portfolio of funded research in the field of aging, exercise, and functional decline. Selects and administers physical performance measures for Gerofit research and clinical activities. Acts as Program Manager for Gerofit research and clinical project(s) and leads and participates in the activities of the team. Manages communications and changes to the scope, direction, and processes of projects. Plans management approach for projects; conducts complete evaluations of project operations; collects, analyzes, manages, and documents data; interprets results; and documents and reports findings. Organizes the data collection and data management processes. Assures compliance with study protocols, study operations manuals, standard operating procedures, and other relevant policies and procedures. Implements study interventions and/or data abstraction, data collection, and data management procedures. Gathers statistical and narrative data on program status, including resource utilization, statistical data on participation, and adherence to study protocols on matters such as participant education and study interventions. Organizes data collection processes, statistical analysis, and data management, summarizing research data using computerized programs. Develops study operations manuals, defining systems and procedures to follow for optimal operation of complex research projects.
