This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Mechanical Group, Baltimore, Maryland
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to Lead or Supervise. (SCREENOUT) 2. Operation of machine tools 3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) 4. Ability to use shop drawings 5. Measurement and Layout 6. Ability to use hand tools for machine shop 7. Knowledge of metals National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
This position directly or through a leader supervises a group of employees who perform all kinds of trade tasks involved in constructing, repairing or renovating a wide variety of types and sizes of marine craft and vessels and in connection with miscellaneous manufacturing and facility projects performed at the YARD. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties include: Developing plans, specifications, schedules and job orders to become thoroughly familiar with assignments and recommends changes that will result in more effective, efficient and economical work progress. Submitting reports with recommended repairs, modifications or changes. Advising the planning and estimating department of planning and scheduling changes needed and at times supplies job estimates. Checking the work during progress, corrects deficiencies and solves work problems referred to him Ensuring tools, equipment and material are properly used and protected. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.
